Good. That's-- good.

You ever wish he talked to you more, still?

Yeah, well, he's got a responsibility to you, too. As a friend.

Yeah? [He scratches his jaw, lightly, thinking about that.]

Well, what the hell do I know, right? Everyone's different. Think you'd say we were friends, C?

...Huh. You know what, I wanna be able to say what does, but I don't think I know, either.

I dunno. I think we are, I told you stuff I don't tell most people. I like hanging out with you. But maybe it ain't the same on your end.

[He shrugs.]

If you like hanging out, still, sure. That's pretty much all I did with my friends in school.

Yeah, I hardly went, either. [Said with a little grin-- he went more often than he'd give himself credit for, but he isn't exactly bookish.]

Uh... [He leans back agains this cabinets and taps his foot on the floor a little.]

I mean, I thought I didn't like it all that much back then. I skipped classes a lot because I had to sit still a lot, which, you know. [You've met him, Credence.]

Most of the teachers just wanted you to memorize the book and not do much, uh, but some of them were okay. I had an art teacher once that I liked. Think he might even have liked me.

[He may have been something of a pest.]

Yeah, like I said. Most of my teachers were glad to have an excuse to kick me outta class.

Got a lot worse once I got to high school and bought a motorcycle, too. Not that my parents knew.

[He snorts.]

Yeah, sure. But I didn't really listen to my parents, either.

[He shrugs.]

Because my dad was never around, and my mom didn't have the heart to say 'no' to me most of the time. When my dad was around we fought, once I got old enough.

[For once, he has the decency to look a little sheepish.]

I'm not saying I made good choices for myself. I think I even knew it back then.

[He nods.]

Needed a diploma to get into the Police Academy, learn how to do that. But by that time I knew what I was doing it for. I never really got why I needed to learn some of the stuff I did-- and in the Academy it was cool, 'cause I got to learn stuff I needed to learn about and then go out and train.
