He watches, and feels himself smiling.

"You've come a long way from us setting your ceiling on fire. From you unable to say the m word."

Credence smiles shyly in return.

"It's been nearly two years. I don't think I could have stayed the same all that time."

He still feels broken in some ways, but shifting toward coherence in others.

"I'm glad you didn't try."

He says, and clears his throat.

"Okay. Hm hm, what comes after cleaning?"

As if he has the first idea, but he can at least venture a guess.

"Painting? I suppose. What kind of colors do you want?"

[magician_king]

"White."

Always all the time everywhere.

"A couple of rooms need the wallpaper stripped down."

[credere]

Credence nods.

"I can do that. Are you going to want to change - I don't know, the door handles? The drapes?"

In those rooms that currently have either.

[magician_king]

"Oh no. I guess I need to decide about that."

Yikes, he bites his bottom lip.

"What's the difference between a good doorknob and a bad doorknob."

[credere]

"I think any kind is fine as long as it works," Credence says, sincerely, and informed by a history of households with nonfunctional door closures.

[magician_king]

"They all work. But I'd like some curtains."

But they'll have to figure them out.

"Next port. How's yours going?"

[credere]

"Um. Slowly, I guess. I've been doing a lot more work around the ship - you know, the dinner shift, our maintenance things."

It still feels selfish to be expending much effort on himself.

[magician_king]

"Let's do that interspersed with this."

He proposes, because;

"I want to learn more about this."

[credere]

Credence nods.

"I think I'd like....blue, for my room. And green, or yellow."

Light, outdoorsy colors.

[magician_king]

"Which walls?"

Because that's a lot for a room.

"Want to do that tomorrow?"

[credere]

Credence nods and tries to rein it in a bit.

"Maybe...green for the bedroom and blue for the bathroom?"

All he's got in there is his toilet and sink, but he's still bored of it being white.

[magician_king]

"Maybe we could do the hallway yellow. We're maintenance."

He could just make an executive decision.

"It's basically our hall."

Credence twitches a nervous laugh, then sobers.

"I remember, at Hogwarts - in the breach. The pictures, the paintings, they moved. I don't know if we could do that with a wall, maybe."

Slowly drifting clouds, or rolling waves, or swaying grass.

[magician_king]

"We can try." He says, brow creasing. It's the kind of puzzle he needs exactly right now. Beautiful sorcery.

"I'll do the math tonight, see what I can figure out."

[credere]

Credence smiles fleetingly.

"...we might need someone who's good at that kind of painting, if you're not? I know I can't do that sort of thing."

[magician_king]

"You know, I'm good- but let's involve people."

He says, perking up ever so slightly.

"We could do a few around, let people take different pieces."

[credere]

Credence nods readily.

"I don't know if it needs the person painting to be magic, or if it's about the paints or the brushes or - but I guess even if they don't move, it'll still look nice, right...?"

Nothing wrong with stationary murals.

[magician_king]

"Wait. I just thought of how this is going to go wrong as soon as we introduce people to it."

He says, because Jesus.

[credere]

"....I didn't want to say that we might want to not let Bill paint," Credence admits. But Cipher isn't the only one who might cause trouble.

[magician_king]

"Or a lot of people."

Frowning, thoughtfully.

"Who's one person we can ask to do one scene?"

[credere]

"...I'm sure Miss Wildthyme can paint."

True, it might involve....unicorns or nudity or something, but it won't be the (figurative or literal) car wreck that someone like Bill would come up with.

[magician_king]

"That'd be nice. Let me do the underlying magic then let her paint it up somewhere, and we can surprise her by bringing it to life for her."

He thinks she'd like that.

"I don't tell her I appreciate her often enough."
