"I don't know," he says. "I think you can...I think you can learn. I didn't really care about living for a while."

"Sounds like a good recipe for making yourself miserable." Klaus observes, airily, "Teaching yourself to care more about a bunch of things that are definitely going to go wrong."

"No," Credence says thoughtfully. "I've cared about things and seen them go wrong. I'm still happier now."

"Well." Klaus takes another little swig of coffee from the flask, "You live your truth, Credence, I'm not gonna argue with it."

But it's not an experience that he can say he shares.

Credence takes a sip of his own coffee and is quiet for a while.

"Do you have a truth, Klaus?"

[mausoleavemealone]

Now it's Klaus's turn to be quiet for a long moment, turning the question over before finally answering.

"I don't think so.
Pretty sure I left it behind in Vietnam."

Credence doesn't know what to say to that, so for a little while he just sits with it.

"So what are you living now?"

[mausoleavemealone]

"I don't know. Whatever's comfortable."

And if it's a lie, it's a comfortable lie. He'll take it

He frowns at the plants for a few moments.

"I think you need a new truth."
