"Hm."

Says Quentin, with a snort.

"Assume those are innaccurate, obviously."

Credence can't argue with that.

"There's a lot in my book about - M-A-C-U-S-A that's...different," he says haltingly. "It says there were some wizards who handed in people to be tried, even though they knew they weren't - just for money."

[magician_king]

"You were telling me, about the reputation of the old Barebones."

Unless he's confusing two different things.

"That's them, right?"

[credere]

"Yes. They were - they called them Scourers. They hated witches and wizards even though they were...."

He still doesn't understand.

"I don't know how they could be like that."

[magician_king]

"Especially not from a book written from their enemy's perspective."

Agrees Quentin, eyebrows raising.

"You'e got to find a more even handed account."

[credere]

"They murdered people," Credence says faintly, the implication being: how can anyone be even handed about that?

[magician_king]

"Yeah. It probably won't be good. But never believe anything written by anyone's enemy."

As a matter of principle.

"I'll dig in the library too and see what I can find."

[credere]

He's not even sure how much more he can bear to know, at this point, but he finds it borderline impossible to turn down anything Quentin's offering to him.

"Thank you."

[magician_king]

"Any time."

He says, as usual, just wanting to help.

"You're doing good lately, you know? You seem- like you're hitting your stride."

[credere]

"Oh." He looks a little surprised by the idea. "I guess - I've been here for a long time. I'm - getting used to it."

[magician_king]

"You can tell."

He agrees.

"And it suits you. Alec said you asked for a wand?"

[credere]

"I - already have one, it just only works when I'm with Mister Scamander," he explains. "That was something Miss Kinney did for me."

[magician_king]

"Right, but tweaking it so you can use it whenever you want."

Clarifying, quickly.

"With Alec, or with me-"

[credere]

"Oh - yes. I asked for that, I don't - I think he will."

[magician_king]

"I'm sure he will."

Quentin agrees.

"So what's the first of your magic you want to do?"

[credere]

"...I don't know. Mr Scamander tried to teach me a spell to repair broken things, I guess that would be - useful, for work."

Not exactly firing his imagination, however.

[magician_king]

"Why? You've already got me. My specialization is literally repair of small objects, I do it like breathing. You should do something cool."

He won't say what, wants Credence to fill in that blank.

[credere]

Credence furrows his brow.

"Cool. I, um, I don't know what that would be."

He hears people throw the word around but he still doesn't know exactly what it means.

[magician_king]

"What do you feel excited about?"

He clarifies.

"Some part of your life you enjoy right now."

[credere]

"Oh." He frowns. "I - I like cooking for people. I like - making things?"

'Excitement' is still some way off.

[magician_king]

"You could practice some domestic charms. Self-cooking skillets?"

Imagining, trying to ponder.

"Basic transfigurations- water into fruit punch."

[credere]

Water into anything sounds too close to outright heresy, but cooking in general, he thinks he can get on board with.

"Yes. That - that sounds good, it sounds - helpful."

[magician_king]

"Okay."

Says Quentin, grinning.

"Did you ever get a spell off the ground with Newt?"

[credere]

He shakes his head, awkwardly. It remains the case that he hadn't really...wanted to.

"Not yet. When I can do more it might be - different."

[magician_king]

"Probably. You'll feel calmer."

He'd have to guess.

"I can't wait to see you get rolling on it. I think you're going to be a great wizard."
