That's not a surprise, that he didn't ask. She would have more than expected that, and she trusts that Jesse was a good warden to him, saw to whatever little things he might have picked up on that Credence might benefit from.
"How do you usually spend your time here?" She asks now, wondering if she'll get any hints from his answer.
"I work in maintenance with Mr Coldwater," he says, "and with Mrs Jennings,
in the kitchen, sometimes, if she asks me. I make sure the chapel is clean
and tidy. And I study my scripture."
That makes her smile a little, pleased with the idea of Credence learning to work with his hands, learn a trade she's sure would get him far if he wanted it to, and glad that he did end up in the kitchen. She doesn't know Quentin outside of the last breach, but she knows and trusts Elizabeth. Those both sound like good places for him to be.
"I don't think there's any reason to change that, then. With us just being paired for the month there isn't a lot that I can do for you, but I think we both know that sometimes just company, not feeling so alone, can go a long way."
She's never really stopped to talk to him about the way he stayed with her in Zero when she was locked up, the comfort his continual presence brought to her, but this is a way to try to do that, to thank him for it.
"Yes," he murmurs, understanding what she's looking back to.
Sometimes - he remembers when him or one of his sisters had fallen foul of
their mother's temper, they would just sit together for a while. No words,
little touch, just - company. It helped. A palpable reminder that they were
not alone in their struggles.
"...Do you think something bad will happen with the other ship?"
"Yes," she answers honestly, because lying to him won't get them anywhere. "But I intend to stay here. If anything does happen I'd rather defend my home than be on the front lines."
She has the powers to do good there, striking out to take resources for herself is first nature, but it's different here, now. The barge is different, not her downed AT-AT and she wouldn't be the only person she had to keep safe. Better to be ready to fight here, in territory she knows, where her presence might bring peace of mind to the inmates who are stuck where they are.
"You won't, Credence. And even if it's not this month, I'd still make sure you were alright."
Just because they're friends like that, she'd like to think. She would hope that he knows, and she thinks that maybe he does and just isn't sure what it really means. Maybe he knows, but doesn't know how to process and accept it.
"A lot of the people I- cared about, here, they've gone now. My first inmate, people I didn't realize were my friends until they'd gone, they've all disappeared." She says, voice going a little softer now. "So I want to make sure the people I do still have are safe. That includes you, whether or not we're paired."

"I - if it's this month - I'll try not to cause you any trouble, Miss Rey."
